About Wood Knot Waste

‘Wood Knot Waste’ is a Social Enterprise of Shekinah Mission, a Plymouth based Charity.

Social enterprises are social mission driven organisations which trade in goods or services for a social purpose. Their aim to accomplish targets that are social and environmental as well as financial is often referred to as having a triple bottom line. Social enterprises are profit-making businesses set up to tackle a social or environmental need. Many commercial businesses would consider themselves to have social objectives, but social enterprises are distinctive because their social or environmental purpose is central to what they do.

At ‘Wood Knot Waste’ our triple bottom line is as follows:

Social Aim –

• To engage with individuals furthest removed from social inclusion within an environment and structure that is captivating, flexible and safe with realistic, achievable and meaningful progression markers.
• To assist individuals in gaining confidence, self worth, life and work skills needed in order to achieve a more positive, sustainable and fruitful future for themselves.
• To provide Level 1 training in carpentry, retail and customer services with accreditation through National Open Network College.
• To provide short term ‘safe’ paid employment where individuals will be able to undertake Level 2 training in the aforementioned subjects coupled with the opportunity to ‘bank’ wages in order to secure sustainable private tenancies (deposits and rent in advance)
• To provide a comprehensive exit strategy towards gaining sustainable employment.

Environmental Aim –

‘7.5 million Tonnes of wood is wasted every year in England with 6 million of that being put to landfill’

• By re-using wasted grade 1 wood we are helping reduce the amount going to landfill.
• Every piece of reclaimed wood we use to make our products means that another tree need not be cut down thus preserving our woodlands.
• To act as a champion for re-cycling and to promote how waste materials can be used for training and the making of quality saleable products.

Financial Aim –

• To provide a service and product that is of the highest quality but also affordable and great value for money.
• All profits will be put back into the charity; this will help us to maintain and build on our current services thus helping more individuals who are in need. (please see Shekinah Mission website)
